When
I look at your pieces, I feel like I've gone deep see diving and found a
lost treasure chest. Where do you come up with your concepts and
designs?
Reiner Mengesdorf: I get my inspiration from
different sources, sometimes from the gemstone itself, other times from
my own paintings or a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Cristina Taranu: One of my first inspirations was our favorite vacation
place, Riviera Maya, Mexico. I am fascinated by the beauty of nature and
its unique shapes and colors.
Each of your pieces is handcrafted, which I'm sure help
lends that "Old World" feel. Can you estimate how long this
process takes?
C&R: The time to produce a piece varies from a couple of hours to
several weeks.
You created Reinerland in 2006, were you already working
together at that point?
C: After I graduated from Studio Jewelers in 2005, I started working on
my own designs. Reiner is a self taught jewelry designer. Reinerland was
born in 2006, only after a few month of working together.
Do you have a favorite piece (or pieces)?
R: My favorite piece is always changing, right now it would be the Coral
Ring.
C: The Flower Hoops are one of the first pieces I designed and they are
still one of my favorite. I love the engagement ring Reiner made for me
and the Snowflake pendant he designed.
Where do you see the future of Reinerland Jewelry?
C&R:
We hope to keep making jewelry the way we are at the moment, keeping it
artistic and handcrafted with a good amount of one of a kind pieces. We
would also like to have our own store with a studio in the next few
years.
Tell us all a little bit about your own personal styles.
Favorite pieces, designers, etc.
R: My favorite metal is rose gold. I don’t follow any fashion trends, I
would like my jewelry to be timeless.
C: I love Alexander McQueen, he is one of my favorite designers and an
amazing artist. My personal style is feminine and playful. I like to
wear jewelry that goes together but is not matching. I often wear two
different metals together, like rose gold with yellow gold or silver
with yellow gold.
